Charles F von Gunten

Charles F von Gunten, MD, PhD, is Medical Director of the Doris A Howell Service at the Moores Cancer Center of the University of California, San Diego, which is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is also Provost of the Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice, which sponsors one of the largest fellowship programs training physicians in hospice and palliative medicine. As a palliative medicine specialist he played an important role in the recognition of the subspecialty in the US in 2006. He has published over 200 papers and is Editor in Chief of the Journal of Palliative Medicine.
