The PrEvCan – Cancer Prevention Across Europe – campaign, initiated by the European Oncology Nursing Society (EONS) and supported by ESMO, aims to reduce the burden of cancer by promoting a different way we can decrease cancer risk each month.

This August, the PrEvCan campaign focuses on raising awareness about the connection between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cancer risk, and the importance of vaccination for all. To help spread this important message, we spoke with Prof. Daniel Kelly from Cardiff University, UK, who holds the Royal College of Nursing Chair of Nursing Research and is the co-Chair of the European Cancer Associations HPV Action Network. During the interview, we explored the relationship between HPV infection and various types of cancer, the scientific evidence supporting HPV vaccination, and addressed some of the challenges associated with vaccine hesitancy.

Questions

  1. What is known about how HPV infection increases the risk of developing cancer, and which types of cancer are thought to be associated with HPV infection? (0:49)
  2. What does the scientific evidence tell us about the efficacy and safety of HPV vaccination for cancer prevention, and why is it crucial for everyone, regardless of gender, to get vaccinated? (2:03)
  3. Are there any common misconceptions or concerns surrounding HPV vaccination that may hinder its acceptance, and what could be done to help address these and promote the importance of vaccination for all? (3:32)
