Insights from the touchONCOLOGY Future Leaders 2025

As advances across all oncology specialties continue to evolve at pace, staying ahead of the curve is more important than ever. From gene expression profiling and liquid biopsy, to the integration of minimal residual disease monitoring using ctDNA and the potential of CAR-T therapy, innovation is reshaping the way clinicians diagnose and treat even the more difficult-to-treat cancers. With the second half of 2025 underway, we asked our touchONCOLOGY Future Leaders 2025 to share the developments they believe will shape the future of the field. Here, they highlight five exciting areas that promise to transform practice – not only as the year draws to a close, but well into the future.

Emerging data in ADCs and EGFR bispecifics

Emerging data on antibody–drug conjugates and epidermal growth factor receptor bispecific antibodies in head and neck cancers highlight promising efficacy, manageable toxicity and potential synergy with immunotherapy. These novel strategies may overcome resistance to standard therapies, offering new hope for patients.

Gene expression profiling and liquid biopsies guiding therapy

The expanding role of gene expression profiling and liquid biopsies is reshaping not only dermatological and cutaneous malignancies, but the wider oncology field by enabling earlier detection, real-time monitoring and more precise, personalized therapy selection. These tools hold promise for improving outcomes across multiple cancers, making this a transformative area of development to watch in late 2025 and beyond.

Integration of MRD monitoring using ctDNA

One emerging trend in breast cancer that I believe deserves increased attention in the second half of 2025 is the integration of minimal residual disease (MRD) monitoring using ctDNA to guide adjuvant therapy escalation or de-escalation (particularly in early-stage HR-positive/HER2-negative and triple-negative breast cancer). The ctDNA assays are becoming more and more sensitive and standardized, there are many trials ongoing, demonstrating positive results, and there is a great potential in MRD to override clinicopathological and molecular risk in tailoring therapy (especially de-escalating). It is truly an important surrogate endpoint! This would shift adjuvant treatment approach from a conventional to a truly individualized response – adaptive approach, which is a quite revolutionary achievement in breast cancer oncology.

Outpatient administration of bispecific antibodies

Outpatient administration of bispecific antibodies will be emerging in the years to come. This will alter community oncology practice, and it will raise new questions about the role for CAR-T therapy in certain settings.

Immunotherapy reshaping perioperative gastric care

The demonstration of efficacy for fluorouracil, leucovorin, oxaliplatin and docetaxel (FLOT) plus durvalumab in resectable, locally-advanced gastroesophageal junction and gastric cancers, as evidenced by the MATTERHORN trial, marks a potential paradigm shift. Immune checkpoint inhibitors are increasingly being incorporated into pre- and post-operative standard-of-care regimens.
